Steroids in Baseball – The Side Effects
Nowadays, sports are surrounded by steroid controversies. Often after almost every game we hear, ’this player must be on steroids’ or ‘this is impossible until and unless the athlete is on steroids’. Just as any other sport, steroids are used in baseballs by players. Though we have heard a lot about steroids, most of us are unaware of what steroids are or what the side effects of using steroids are.
What are steroids? Steroids are a male, synthetic version of hormone testosterone. Testosterone is known to enhance the development of muscles and its growth. When testosterone is supplemented with the steroids, one can achieve a lot such as body fat reduction, increase in the muscle mass and improvement in ability of endurance.
There are a number of reasons as to why baseball athletes want to have steroids. The major reason is that they believe they have an edge over other players and can help team win. They believe that they can hit harder and as further as possible due to intake of steroids.
Although steroids may be an advantage, but it has a number of side effects for both physical and psychological. Looking at psychological effects, baseball athlete is known to different types of moods from having the mood of well being to as far as being in depression. Also, it is said the mood switches from one to another quickly. Physically, steroids can increase the ability to endure or increase muscle mass but on the worst side it is known to damage liver, can cause cancer, excessive hair loss or growth, acne problem, testicular atrophy and much more.
In addition to muscle mass increase, reduction in body fat, ability to endure, athletes believe that it is the path leading to fame. Little do the athletes acknowledge steroid’s side effects? It can lead to permanent disability so many questions whether steroids should be used or not considering their risks and rewards.
Even in baseball history, you will find steroids controversies surrounding legendary players but no proof has come up to proof that these legendary players used steroids. There are many legendary players namely, Gary Sheffield, Barry Bonds, Mark Mcwire. Barry Bonds was accused of setting up a record number of home runs in one season with the help of steroids. It was believed that the steroids were provided to him by his close friend. Many questioned him whether steroids were used to set this record or was it Barry simply had a dream season.
Without any solid proof one cannot say whether a baseball athlete is on steroids or not. Many believe, whether or not using, an athlete has to go out in the field and still face the ball and hot for runs.
Steroids can provide an athlete with many instant advantages such as fame, strength and other physical and mental strength and much more but steroids also give harmful risks. One’s safety cannot be compromised with the advantages. The side effects of steroids are very harmful and athlete should avoid using them as they are not worth their health. Baseball should be played with honor and achieve results with one’s own ability.
